Category Four – Population Category 2000 – 5000
Winner: Donegal Town

Since 1999, the Donegal Town Community Council (DTCC), a voluntary organisation, has been promoting the social economic and cultural development of Donegal Town by encouraging public awareness/participation by inspiring a sense of civic pride through a programme of activities, information and advice. The continued aim is to encourage, promote and aid the social and economic regeneration of the area, by promoting cohesion amongst individuals and organisations in the interest of the community. The DTCC lobbies Government, applies for grant aid, liaises with various statutory/voluntary agencies and is responsible for many varied initiatives such as Donegal Town Family Resource Centre, Community Playground, Tourism Committee, Food Festival and the development of the Community Enterprise Centre. It has successfully secured funding through the Town & Village Renewal Scheme under a sub-group. DTCC hosts/maintains several Websites as part as their Tourism initiatives. DTCC promotes the enhancement of Donegal Town and has a direct positive impact on the quality of life for all.

The judges thought their visit to the winning entry was stimulating and enjoyable. There was a large turnout of local businesses demonstrating the cohesion of this hard-working community. They were immediately aware of activities and events which crucially were delivered, in the main, by volunteers. Civic pride and enthusiasm are difficult to generate, as they require “buy in” from the local community. That this has been achieved is not in doubt. An excellent entry from an extremely enthusiastic group.

Runners Up: Abbeyfeale, Co Limerick and Ballinrobe, Co Mayo.
