Terryglass, Co Tipperary

Category One: Population Category 0 – 300

Winner: Terryglass, Co Tipperary

Summary:

Terryglass is a picturesque and vibrant village located on the northern shores of Lough Derg. The Terryglass Improvement Association (TIA) began its quest to improve amenities for the community 50 years ago. The purpose was to mobilise the community to access Lough Derg and to build a harbour. These amenities were intended for locals and visitors and that mission to enhance the village continues to this day. Terryglass won National Tidy Towns Awards as well as the Best Kept Village a number of times. Over the last number of years, they have utilised the Town and Village Renewal Scheme to develop eleven new projects in the Village and Harbour, including a Children’s Playground. While Terryglass has just 243 residents, they punch well above their weight with participation and active support. The group works closely with other active community groups including the Community Hall, Terryglass/Kilbarron Historical Society, Terryglass Living Community, Terryglass Conservation Club, Angling and Conservation Club and Lough Derg Water Sports.

The judges were initially captivated by an informative presentation displaying the rich heritage and character of this village and its hinterland. The local organization overseeing all this is as vibrant today as it was when set up nearly 50 years ago. The judges felt that the village is fortunate to have an entire community using their own skills and expertise to maintain their beautiful location.  This is Pride of Place in action.
