Winner: Cois Cairn Estate, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council Area, Co Dublin

Summary

Cois Cairn is a beautiful estate, consisting of 134 houses, located on the border of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County and Wicklow County. In 2003 the Estate Management Forum was formed in partnership with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. The good work of the previous Residents Association continued in improving the environment and getting the youth and children involved in Arts and Crafts, clean-ups, planting and fun days. In 2009 the building of the new Community Centre got underway with a multi-use games area allowing many activities and social events to take place.

All the various cultures living in the Estate – Travellers, Spanish, Indian, Japanese and mixed race families – are very much part of the community, reflecting the new multiculturism in Ireland. A Pathway of Clay Memories, Hopes and Dreams, made up from thoughts and ideas from every family in the community was designed and funded by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

Citation

The very impressive winner of category eight demonstrated what can be achieved when residents in a community and the local authority work together in a planned manner to improve the quality of life for the entire community.
