Summary
Borris (An Bhuiríos, formerly Buirgheas Ó nDróna) population 1,042, is a beautiful, untouched town full of charm and heritage commanding panoramic views. Its old granite houses, Victorian shop fronts and 16-arch limestone viaduct have remained largely intact whilst the Borris Bars and Pubs are renowned for their friendly, old world atmosphere and traditional music evenings. Borris House the ancestral home of the MacMurrough Kavanaghs former Celtic Kings of Leinster is in the town centre and the family still lives there. Formerly a strong market town, the modern town has developed industrial growth which includes firms that have established international trading partners. Borris is also home to an artistic community who have developed creative industries, for example, craft, film, cultural and artistic festivals. The above combined with excellent educational and social facilities, makes Borris a special place to live, visit and work.

The very impressive winner of category three demonstrated how a community works with its many partners to provide a wonderful place in which to live. The judges were immediately struck by the warmth and energy of a committed community, the level of culture, demonstrable heritage and activities in the town. The built environment and architecture are pleasing to the eye and wonderfully preserved. This is a friendly, dynamic and confident community. The judges had no desire to leave!
