Winner: Cavan Autism Education & Training Centre

Summary:

Cavan Autism Education & Training Centre (HUB) CLG (CAETC) is a registered charity which was recently established to provide a full-time day service to young adults with a diagnosis of autism in county Cavan and surrounding areas. The centre is to provide a four-year person-centred autism specific education and training service for young adults. The Charity will be liaising closely with the HSE regarding referrals. CMETB (Cavan & Monaghan Education Training Board) will provide education/training courses. Cavan Co Council have assisted with the provision of equipment. CAETC CLG will also liaise with Cavan Sports Partnership and others regarding health and fitness and other relevant programmes. The concept arose from the experiences, observations and aspirations of parents of young adults on the autism spectrum who have seen first-hand the need for autism specific adult day services. Service users will have improved life skills, greater independence and depending on ability, a QQI qualification with the hope of progressing to further education or employment.

The award is for determination to provide services for a very specific group arising from the experiences, observations and aspirations of their parents. The initiative was ground breaking and the group was absolutely resolute.
