Cities Section: Category Five – Community Wellbeing Initiative
Winner: Pink Ladies Cancer Support Group, Derry/Londonderry

Summary:

The Pink Ladies Cancer Support Group was established in May 2005 and is a grassroots community-based approach to supporting those living with or after cancer and their families who have been affected either directly or indirectly. Initially set up as a Breast Cancer only support group in one area of the city, they now deliver a range of services to both male/female/children beneficiaries coping with all types of cancers and their carers across all areas of the Derry Strabane District Council Ward. In the recent year with funding from National lottery community they have reached rural areas in the north west region. The organisation is unique in that it offers local community-based access to specialised support and advice/information services which are preferable for many to those in a more formal medical or hospital setting that are often avoided once treatment is over because of the traumatic journey involved.

Citation:

This initiative totally inspired the judges where so many people gave testimonials of the support and confidence they obtained while managing the debilitating illness of cancer. Words cannot adequately describe the value of this group’s work and the impact it has on so many. It was a memorable visit highlighted by a fabulous choir and drama performance where the judges were immediately welcomed into the arms of a wonderful, caring and professional group of people focussed on ensuring that everybody in their area of care or need would be supported.
