Terryglass, Co Tipperary
On Friday 18th September 2020 in the middle of Covid-19 restrictions, Terryglass celebrated 50 years since the forming of “Terryglass Improvements Association”, at the inaugural meeting recorded in an old school exercise book, the primary objective was to encourage development of shore or Lough Derg into a Harbour, and Shannon Lane.
Over the past 50 years the Association has driven many projects with voluntary labour and machinery, recent years have seen a lot more support from a variety of grants and Government funding measures.
2020 was a very difficult year for Terryglass during the Covid-19 crisis, but once we were allowed out on the streets again many residents and volunteers began tidying up small areas in and around the village. We had a “plant a window box” competition with 24 window boxes placed at strategic walls and corners throughout the village.
Terryglass was selected by Tipperary County Council in 2020 and nominated for the Annual Pride of Place Competition. Due to the restrictions, it was arranged as a Zoom Call on Friday 18th September, which was an amazing co-incidence as it was not known to the Judges then that this was the actual 50th Anniversary! We were hoping this was a good omen! What a surprise when we were announced as Winners!
The Committee decided that as we couldn’t proceed with a public gathering to mark this historic milestone so it will be postponed until another occasion, next year we hope!
